Event seen, but duration not timed. 1. Single chord, or average length of closely-spaced chords. 2. Few chords, or coverage less than half of asteroid, size and shape quite uncertain. 3. Like 2, but elliptical shape determined from pole location and lightcurve fit to data. 4. Good coverage more than half of asteroid, ellipse is fit to observed chords. 5. Same as 4, but combined with pole location and/or lightcurve data to obtain average 3-dimensional shape. 6. This was just an observation of an occultation by a jet of material coming from Chiron, but there are no observations of Chiron itself occulting the star. Thus, the observations can not improve on the geometry of the occultation that was determined by astrometric observations. Also, the Mar. 8 date may be wrong - the ephemeris & star position show that it occurred on Mar. 9, but Mar. 7 is typed for the observed time in the file - the reference just needs to be checked to resolve this. 7. Goncalves saw two quick occultations of the star, with 11.4s from 1st D to the 2nd R, compared with 21s expected for the central duration. So this was probably a grazing occultation near one of the limits, with the two events caused by "mountains" of Moira, not by a satellite. 8. Like #7, a brief "blink" was also recorded close to the main event, probably caused by a mountain of Jarnefelt, not by a satellite. a. Not observed by IRAS, data are from TRIAD (Bowell et al. 1979). The number following "a" is the TRIAD diameter weight code. A. First visual observation of an occultation of a star by an asteroid. B. First photoelectric recording of an occultation of a star by an asteroid. D. Two other observatories were in conflict; one reported an occultation, the other did not. E. Visual and photoelectric observations of one of the secondary events were time coincident. F. First photograph of an occultation of a star by an asteroid. G. Best observed event. H. Coverage confined to one hemisphere of the asteroid. I. Secondary event reported to be time coincident by 2 stations 600 m apart. J. Incomplete data. K. First television recording of an occultation of a star by an asteroid. L. First report of more than one disappearance/reappearance sequence timed during the same occultation indicating asteroidal topography. M. First television recording of a secondary occultation. A first version of this manually-produced list was prepared by Paul Maley in 1982 in Revista Mexicana Astronomia y Astroficica, Vol. 5, pp. 213-216 (29 occultations were logged). I updated the list and expanded the information in it to its present form in 1988 to provide input for Millis and my chapter in the Asteroids II book that was published in 1989. Isao Sato produced a similar list in his 1996 doctoral dissertation, using my 1988 list, the summary publications by Jim Stamm in Occultation Newsletter, and other sources. During 1997 and 1998, Douglas Faust used Sato's work and the best reports of the observations that we could obtain to prepare the observational datasets and update this list. I have made the most recent changes, and have added some notes indicating where more work is needed to reconcile this list with the summary information that I can now produce automatically from the observational datasets. The automatic lists will be expanded soon to include the observed geocentric offsets of the asteroid from the occulted star, and the asteroid's position when the offsets are added to the best-available position from the star from HIP, ACT, or elsewhere. The work during 1997 and 1998 has been supported in large part by NASA grant NAGW-4714, "Occultation Catalog Improvement using HIPPARCOS Data".
